A comprehensive retrospective exhibition on the photography of Brassaï
The Mapfre Foundation is set to host a comprehensive retrospective exhibition on the work of the great photographer of the Paris of the 1930s, the first large-scale exhibition of its kind since the year 2000.
Gyula Halász, better known as Brassaï, was one of the giants of 20th century photography. What has contributed definitively to his iconic status is the work that he did in the Paris of the 1930s. Brassaï understood that technique was a way of provoking emotions and that there was a deep artistic element in photography that was at least as powerful as that existing in painting or film. His images are consequently like poetic moments that are frozen in time. An essential part of his work is the Paris de Nuit series, an extensive collection of photographs of mysterious, solitary places and neighbourhoods in the French capital during the interwar period. Brassaï's oeuvre is very extensive and for years has been spread around different museums, but now, his finest images are coming together in a new exhibition that will begin to tour the world after making its first stop in Barcelona at Casa Garriga Nogués, the headquarters of the Mapfre Foundation.
This is the first retrospective exhibition on Brassaï since the year 2000, and the first in Spain since 1993. It will therefore be an excellent opportunity to enter into the poetic world of Brassaï, before the the exhibition travels on to Madrid in May and later to San Francisco.
