Perception and reality: understanding virtual worlds

On December 15 the sixth of the ICREA-CCCB Debates from the «Machines That Think: Opportunities and Dilemmas of Artificial Intelligence» series, delves into the world of virtual reality with the researcher Mel Slater.

On Tuesday December 15, Mel Slater, researcher at the Event Lab (Barcelona University), will discuss the implications of the research which is currently being developed in the field of virtual reality, in the sixth ICREA-CCCB Debates of the series «Machines That Think: Opportunities and Dilemmas of Artificial Intelligence». The talk is free and will be presented by Monica Lopez Ferrado, scientific journalist from the Ara newspaper.

Virtual reality enables us to experience alternative realities, not only of our surroundings but also of ourselves. From the scientific standpoint, this technology is a valuable tool for studying the process of perception in the brain, and also our emotional and cognitive responses and behaviour when faced with different situations. Have we set out on a path of no return to life in virtual worlds? How will this process transform us?

In the ICREA-CCCB Debates, the two institutions regularly work together to present to the public the advances and challenges of high-level research being carried out today here in Catalonia. Each debate will present a project of researchers at the Institució Catalana de Recerca i Estudis Avançats (ICREA – Catalan Institution for Research and Advanced Studies) in different fields of knowledge.
