"Othelo", Shakespeare's classic in a comic version for today

Sala Villarroel presents Othelo, William Shakespeare's great classic in a version by Argentinian Gabriel Chamé.

The show has been performed for three years in Buenos Aires, and it is now being seen for the first time in Europe. And it's in Barcelona. Othelo is Shakespeare's classic that speaks of love and hate, and in this version, director Gabriel Chamé turns the comic into tragic and the tragic into comic. Vibrant and hilarious, the characters play with the text, overflowing with really funny gags to the point of the absurd.

On a stage with the minimum of elements, four actors play out this tragedy with huge amounts of verbal and physical agility, with resources from the world of clowns and burlesque. All in a highly creative game based on the minimum of elements giving the maximum in results. Just one large sheet fills the stage, which becomes a bedroom, the sea, a tavern... in Venice, in Cyprus...

Othelo blends classical and contemporary theatre with a very much up-to-date theme, a common technique in the works of the English master, which are so timeless that they can be transferred to our time. The play speaks of love, of deceit, of loyalty, of ambition, of jealousy... everything happens in front of the audience and the characters themselves, who never leave the stage and can see everything that goes on. Actors Matías Bassi, Julieta Carrera, Hernán Franco and Martín López do the rest.
