Oral autobiographies: the First Person Festival is back

In its sixth annual edition, the Primera Persona literary festival features Ana Curra, Kate Bolick and Joe Pernice, among other writers

The Primera Persona festival, which has been held at the Theatre at CCCB for some years now, is one of the most important literary (in its widest possible sense, including film, music and television) events of the year in Barcelona. Directed by Miqui Otero and Kiko Amat, the festival last for two days and is divided into two sessions in which the guest writers basically speak about themselves. The atmosphere tends to have a pop and even counterculture tinge – the star issues this year are punk and feminism.

The star interviews this year feature, for example on Friday 12 May, Catalan MP Anna Gabriel, who will be talking to Kate Bolick, the author of the essay “Spinster” on the taboo subject of women who don’t want to get married. There will also be a roundtable discussion on the infamous ruta del bakalao, based on the book “¡Bacalao!” by the journalist Luis Costa. In the second session, music critic Joan Pons will be speaking to Ana Curra, the muse of La Movida, while the stars of the series “The Young Ones”, Nigel Planer and Alexei Sayle will be speaking about how it all started. On Saturday 13 May, the focus will be on feminist youtuber Isa Calderón, punk culture historian Jon Savage, and alt. country artists turned novelist Joe Pernice.

Additional information can be found on the CCCB website, where you can also buy tickets.
