Barcelona’s Maritime Museum inaugurates two new exhibitions
'Catalonia Beyond the Sea' and 'Les Sorres X. A Medieval Boat' aim to help visitors understand better the role of the sea in Catalan history.
Barcelona’s Maritime Museum is about to inaugurate two major exhibitions into which it has put a great deal of effort to make them as informative and interesting as possible and which can be visited from 25 February.
The first one, which is titled 'Catalonia beyond the sea. Three centuries of Catalan seafaring' aims to explain how a small country like Catalonia which, in the 18th century, had so few natural resources and a tiny population, became an industrial power in southern Europe during the 19th century. It shows how trade and shipbuilding helped to drive the modernisation of Catalonia and reflects on how the relationship between the Catalans and the sea changed over that time. The exhibition can be seen until 31 December 2029.
The other exhibition is 'Les Sorres X. A medieval boat', which features a 14th century ship that was discovered during the construction of the city’s Olympic Channel in 1990. The boat was one of the few medieval vessels used for trade in the Mediterranean basin that has survived to the present day. The exhibition can be seen until 4 February 2022.
