The opening of Suite Festival 2016




Suite Festival, one of Barcelona’s top concert cycles, is back in town. It aims to bring together the best local and international names, including Johnny Hallyday, Antonio Orozco, Julieta Venegas, Emir Kusturica & The No Smoking Orchestra, Manuel Carrasco, Chris Cornell, Michel Camilo and Sopa de Cabra in a top quality line up. Sopa de Cabra is scheduled to kick things off on 17 January at Gran Teatre del Liceu, which will be the venue for all of the concerts in the festival.

Even though tickets for this iconic Catalan rock band have sold out, the other artists on the Suite Festival billboard are equally tempting and this year’s edition features some difficult to see acts. For example, Johnny Hallyday, considered to be the godfather of French rock and roll with his twist and mashed potato, forged a stage legend that transcends time and borders. Spanish musician Antonio Orozco is coming to Barcelona to present Destino, a, intense, concise, lively sketch of one of Spain’s most popular and respected musical figures.

Another important name in the festival is Julieta Venegas, a singer-songwriter, instrumentalist and producer who has won five Latin Grammys, a Grammy and a number of MTV, awards, among others. Also noteworthy is the performance by Serbian filmmaker Emir Kusturica, who will be appearing with The No Smoking Orchestra, as well as the date at the Liceu with Spanish singer-songwriter Manuel Carrasco – a guarantee of emotion and entrancing rhythms.

The last two concerts in the Suite 2016 cycle will feature Chris Cornell and Michel Camilo. The former has been the vocalist for three multiplatinum selling grunge bands, while the second needs no introduction: he holds an honorary doctorate from Berklee College of Music, he was honoured with a Crystal Apple by the mayor of New York, he was named a Knight of the Heraldic Order of Christopher Columbus and was awarded the Silver Cross of the Order of Duarte Sanchez & Mella by the government of the Dominican Republic.
