The programme of events to celebrate the centenary of the History Archive of the City of Barcelona was presented today
This year, the History Archive of the City of Barcelona, the Arxiu Històric, turns a hundred. To celebrate this, the institution has announced an extensive programme of cultural events that combines informative, academic and fun activities.
In a year that also sees the anniversary of the first appearance of the Diario de Barcelona newspaper (225 years), the Arxiu Històric is staging the exhibition “Diari de Barcelona. A Newspaper Business” until 31 March.
Besides this exhibition, the special activities programme to mark the centenary continues with the Santa Eulàlia festivities and the Llum BCN urban lighting festival. During this festival, spectators will be able to see a projection on the Arxiu Històric's façade of the Time-passes-time-passes mapping (10, 11 and 12 February), an allegory of the passage of time. Also in February, there will be a talk-discussion with Arxiu Històric researchers and users (23rd).
In March, the Arxiu Històric activities will include a visit to the restoration and conservation workshop (16th), while in April the exhibition commemorating the centenary opens: “The History Archive of the City of Barcelona. One hundred years at the service of heritage, information, research and culture."
On 27 April, the Arxiu Històric will host the concert Forgotten Music. Catalan Composers of the Nineteenth Century, while on 11 and 18 May, poetry will be the star, with the poetry recital Rambling Through the Senses.
Other activities scheduled to mark the centenary are: the conference on History Archives in a Digital Environment (25 May), open-doors day at the Arxiu Històric (10 June), l’ou com balla (dancing egg) in the courtyard fountain during the Corpus festivities, an exhibition of popular bestiary (15 June), the tribute to Agustí Duran i Sanpere (5 July), the presentation of the book La Casa de l’Ardiaca [The Archdeacon's House] (September), a historical and illuminated initials workshop (30 September), the Fifteenth Barcelona History Congress (4, 5 and 6 October) and a public event in recognition and gratitude of the donors to the collection.
Situated in the Casa de l’Ardiaca [The Archdeacon's House], Barcelona's Arxiu Històric was founded in 1917 after an agreement taken by the Municipal Plenary with the aim of preserving and highlighting the city's historic documentary heritage.
The Arxiu Històric is one of the centres that comprise the Barcelona Municipal Archive, together with the Contemporary Municipal Archive, the Photographic Archive and the ten municipal district archives.
