The new MUHBA Plaça del Rei archaeological itinerary opens to the public

In parallel, the exhibition “Barcelona in the Late Antiquity period. Christianity, Visigoths and the city” offers an insight into the political, religious, social and urban transformations of the era

On the 16th of March at 7 pm the MUHBA Plaça del Rei will inaugurate its new archaeological itinerary, part of the overall remodelling project for the site. The comprehensive renovation of the itinerary forms part of the project’s first phase, dedicated to the Barcelona during the Late Antiquity period of the 4th to the 7th centuries and consisting of the extension of the area open to visits by the general public and the inclusion of a total of 120 era pieces uncovered during the numerous excavations that have taken place throughout the city.

The new itinerary offers a remodelled presentation of the episcopal hall, the baptistery and the various adjacent structures within a construction of three naves separated by 5th-century columns. The space was formerly used as a bishop’s reception area for audiences, trials and meetings with the local synod as well as for the celebration of councils.

In parallel, the exhibition entitled Barcelona in the Late Antiquity period. Christianity, Visigoths and the city offers a number of explanations for the profound political, religious, social and urban transformations that took place in the Christian and Visigoth Barcelona of the era and is connected to the aforementioned itinerary through the basement of the museum. Among others, the exhibitions presents sections dedicated to Christianity in Barcino, the Christianization of the Elite, Hispano-Romans and Visigoths and the Role of the Bishops in the Late Antiquity.

Guided tours are available, subject to prior reservation, of the archaeological itinerary and the exhibition on the 12th, 15th and 25th of April, the 10th, 16th and 23rd of May, and the 6th, 14th and 27th of June, from 11.30 to 12.30 am. The remodelling project forms part of the archaeological service Pla Barcino.
