New Chilean Film Cycle at Cinemes Girona

New insights and stories from a generation that was born and grew up under a dictatorship.

Chile, (officially the Republic of Chile), has both a troubled history and a rich and varied cultural life, especially in terms of film.

And movie fans who call in at Cinemes Girona these days to catch one of the films that make up the New Chilean Film Cycle will find out for themselves how, following the expressions of rage, pessimism and defeat that marked the films made in the period between the coup d’état by Pinochet (1973) and the first stage of the democratic transition, films by a new generation, that had grown up under the dictatorship, started to appear. This new wave of cinema broke completely away from the work of the previous generation and adopted a variety of discourses and visions showing a country that was more plural and open, though no less dark, unequal and critical.
