“Mystery: The secrets revealed”

Up until the 23rd of February, visitors to the Museu del Modernisme Català can see the results of the scientific analysis performed on a number of pieces in the collection

Thanks to the collaboration of the investigative group of the UPC, ACTIO Art i Ciència, who carry out scientific analysis, investigation and tracing of works of art, the first temporary exhibition in the Museu del Modernisme Català, Mysteria: els secrets desvetllats (Mystery: The secrets revealed), is now open to the public until the 23rd of February.

The infrared reflectometry (IR) analysis carried out on the museum’s collection has revealed some beautiful secrets. In the analysis of 12 pieces by artists such as Laureà Barrau, Gaspar Camps, Ramon Casas, Roman Ribera and Antoni Utrillo, among others, visitors can appreciate the artistic process involved, including preliminary sketches, corrections, deleted elements, pentiments and restorations which the paintings were subjected to at the time and which have only come to light a hundred years later thanks to the union of artistic beauty and scientific rigour.

The process reveals elements that can not be seen in the paintings, such as keys, inscriptions and other hidden marks, all of which constitute important historical documents. The objective of the exhibition is to provide an unusual and fascinating insight into the character and personality of the principal artists of Modernism.
