The Museu del Modernisme Català extends its collection

The renovated collection may be viewed from the 15th of March onwards in the main building on carrer Balmes

Coinciding with its third anniversary, the Museu del Modernisme Català has decided to extend its collection. Thirty new acquisitions to renovate a permanent collection which, despite its short existence, is already one of the most complete collections of its type in Europe.

The museum’s new pieces offer a varied selection and include posters, paintings, furniture and other objects which previously belonged to stately homes, some of which have since disappeared. One of the jewels of the new acquisitions is a desk, or escritoire, by the prestigious local firm Casa Busquets. This piece was one of the specialities of the workshop. Considered a masterpiece of marquetry, the piece includes ten layers of different types of wood. Among the graphic works on display we can highlight the unpublished drawings of Ramon Casas.

The new collection can be seen from the 15th of March onwards in the museum’s main building which in itself is an example of modernist architecture, designed by Enric Sagnier and constructed between 1902 and 1904. A virtual visit will also be available soon. A mobile app is under preparation which will provide a guide to the museum, displaying the pieces in three dimensions and accompanied by the corresponding commentary.
