“Mummenschanz, the musicians of silence”, in the BARTS

The legendary Swiss theatre company will visit Barcelona from the 18th to the 29th of September after not having visited the Catalan capital for fifteen year

As part of their tour in celebration of forty years of performances on stages throughout the world, the Swiss theatre company, Mummenschanz, will visit Barcelona after a period of fifteen years during which they have not performed in the Catalan capital. The venue in charge of hosting the event is the BARTS and the performance runs from the 18th to the 29th of September.

The group was formed in 1972 and is a pioneer in the creation of a non-verbal theatrical language which transcends traditional cultural barriers. Above all, they are renowned for their unique range of masks (made from materials as diverse as foam, plastic and cardboard), their use of light and shadow, and their subtle choreography.

Mummenschanz (the union of the words for “mask” and “joke”, in their mother tongue) was a word used in olden times by mercenaries to identify the wooden mask they donned before going to war. Without the use of sound, these artists offer a spectacular display of amiable, innocent but, at the same time, caustic humour. The performance is visually very impressive and is apt for all ages and cultures.

Aside from the performance itself, which is an anthology of their best pieces, the company will also share off-stage moments with the public in the form of a workshop on the making of masks and theatrical costumes which will take place prior to the performance.
