Món Petit (Small World), a documented road-trip to the antipodes

Marcel Barrena records the journey of Albert Casals and his partner to the East Cape lighthouse in New Zealand

The 15th of March will see the premiere of the documentary Món petit (Small World), by Marcel Barrena, featuring Albert Casals and his girlfriend Anna Socías. The film combines classical documentary techniques with footage filmed by the protagonists themselves and relates the couple’s journey to the antipodes of their home: a lighthouse in East Cape, New Zealand.

Albert Casals contracted leukaemia at five years old and the cure left him in a wheelchair. Since then, however, he has not given up on his dreams and has made a series of solitary journeys the world over with negligible funding. These journey are the focus of the two books that Albert has had published so far, El mundo sobre ruedas (The world on wheels) (2009), and Sin fronteras (Without borders) (2011). The starting point on this occasion, however, is different, as, for the first time, he does not travel alone and he has a specific objective, a goal to be reached. Would you have been up to the challenge?

With music by Pau Vallvé, this cinematographic adventure is at once an act of craziness, a love story, a road movie, an introspective journey and a documented testimonial to courage and the overcoming of personal odds.
