Macbeth

‘Macbeth’ at the Liceu brings together the talents of Shakespeare and Verdi

The city’s opera house on the Rambla will play host to this work until 23 October

Coinciding with Shakespeare Year, Giuseppe Verdi’s opera Macbeth is being staged at Gran Teatre del Liceu l’òpera, with a spectacular staging that exploits the surrealistic nature of the original text. It is both one of Verdi’s best known operas and one of Shakespeare’s most popular texts.

The story is set in Scotland, where Macbeth is told that he is destined to become the King by a trio of witches. From that moment on, he becomes increasingly obsessed with power and will stop at nothing to see the witches’ prediction come true. This universal tragedy unveils the stark truth of the power of ambition and corruption that lie within the human breast.

Verdi was particularly devoted to the play and transformed it into an extraordinary opera that is set to be performed at the Liceu with Christof Loy as stage director and a set that is timelessly classical with surrealistic touches and an aesthetics dominated by black and white to heighten the dramatic effect.
