Lizz Wright and her approach to gospel, in the BARTS

The North American singer will be visiting the city on the 5th of April as part of the Mil·leni Festival

From the heart of the Southern United States of America where she was born, to the Mil·leni Festival in Barcelona, Lizz Wright will be bringing all the magic of her voice to the BARTS stage on the 5th of April. Her last recording, Fellowship, appeared two and a half years ago and will doubtless form the backbone of a show in which Wright will demonstrate her exceptional talent.

And indeed her approach to gospel and jazz is nothing if not exceptional. A truly unique approach with one foot in the gospel tradition in which she grew up and another in more contemporary influences. “I definitely needed to say something about where I come from, but I also needed to say something about the present”, says the artist about her latest work.

Like many other African Americans, Wright, the daughter of a Georgia minister, was introduced to music through singing hymns in the local church. She was even prohibited from listening to pop music, and taught herself piano at the age of fourteen. A new recording is due out this year.
