Carmina Burana

La Fura dels Baus are back with ‘Carmina Burana’

Carl Orff’s popular cantata will be at Teatre Tívoli until 26 March with a spectacular staging by Carlus Padrissa

Catalan theatre company La Fura dels Baus have always stood out for their dazzling stagings that are full of noise, movement and colour. And in recent years, the company has brought its unique approach to the world of opera, of which this “Carmina Burana”, which will be at Barcelona’s Teatre Tivoli for ten days is a great example.

Carl Orff’s 1936 creation “Carmina Burana”, which he based on a collection of Medieval poems, is not exactly an opera; technically speaking it’s a cantata, and the staging designed by La Fura matches the grandiosity of its music with their formidable sense of spectacle.

Their staging includes video, lasers, dance and special effects, together with a wonderful wardrobe and a sense of dramatics that reflects the most Dionysian aspects of the work’s music and lyrics, which, together with a choir, will be sung by soloists Amparo Navarro and Beatriz Díaz (sopranos), Jordi Domènech (contratenor), Josep-Ramón Olivé and Carlos Daza (baritones), and Luca Espinosa (soprano and actress). It’s a bacchanal for the senses that will be on the stage of Teatre Tivoli until 26 March. Tickets are now on sale.
