La Casa de la Paraula celebrates Bloomsday in Barcelona

On Saturday the 13th of June the bookshop invites fans of James Joyce's "Ulysses" to a pre-Bloomsday event that will feature screenings, readings, music, a culinary tasting and a conference

The 16th of June is the day on which Leopold Bloom, the protagonist of the James Joyce masterpiece Ulysses, experiences his vicissitudes in the city of Dublin. Since publication of the book, and in keeping with the Irish tradition, numerous literary groups and associations around the world have organised literary events based on the work.

On Saturday the 13th of June the cultural centre La Casa de la Paraula has organised a special pre-Bloomsday event beginning at 5 pm with the screening of the film by Dora García The Joycean Society (2013) and continuing on an hour later with readings of fragments of the novel by those in attendance and with the collaboration of Frank MacGabhann.

Following this, soprano Alba Mur and pianist Joan Miranda will interpret four pieces, each of which possesses some connection with Bloomsday, from "Love's old sweet song", by J. L. Molloy, which is alluded to being sung in the novel by Molly Bloom, to the Mozart Don Giovanni duet "Là ci darem la mano".

At 7 pm the evening's entertainment will continue with a conversation with Joaquim Mallafrè, the translator of the novel into Catalan, followed by a tasting that will include caraway seed pastry, gorgonzola and wine, designed to put a Joycean culinary touch to the proceedings.

The event has been coordinated by Pere Inglés and Patrick Bohan and participants are invited to dress up as a character from the novel. Entry is free, with the exception of the tasting, and places are limited.
