The most popular Catalan poet of our day will recite a selection of his poetry in a presentation in the La Central bookshop on Tuesday the 3rd of February
Three years after the publication of his previous collection, Es perd el senyal (The signal is lost), Joan Margarit presents Des d’on tornar a estimar, in which the poet and architect, born in Sanaüja in 1938 and the author of more than twenty books of poetry, returns to recurring themes in his work, such as human suffering, love, old age and death, treating them with intelligence and tenderness in verses teeming with beauty.
Margarit began to write poetry in Catalan in 1980 and, in 1981, was awarded the Premi de la Crítica, or Critic’s Prize, for Vell malentès (An old misunderstanding) and, in 1982, the Miquel de Palol Prize for Cants d'Hekatònim de Tifundis (Songs of Hecatonimus of Tifundis), which also won him the Serra d’Or Prize. During the nineties he would publish works such as Els motius del llop (The wolf’s motives) and Estació de França (France Station).
His recognition and popularity would increase with the publication of books such as Joana, in 2002, written as a result of the death of one of his daughters, Càlcul d’estructures (Calculus of Structures), in 2005, and Casa de Misericòrida (House of Mercy), in 2007, which won him several awards including the National Literary Prize.
Much of Margarit’s work has been translated and published in Spanish as well as other languages, such as English, Hebrew and Russian and he considers poetry as a tool for combatting moral upheaval. On Tuesday the 3rd of February in the La Central bookshop he will be accompanied by literary critic and Barcelona University professor Jordi Gracia in the presentation of his latest book of poems.
