Indian dance against gender discrimination

The dance performance I am Chitrangada at Sala Hiroshima from the 28th to the 31st of January

Classicism and modernity, tradition and message. Sala Hiroshima is set to host a dance performance based on a work by the Nobel-prize-winning writer and creator Rabindranath Tagore. Featuring a powerful discourse against gender discrimination, this work showcases all of the wealth and exoticism of classical Indian dance, brought up to date for a contemporary audience.

Barcelona Kathak Project are the creators of this piece, working under the direction of the iconic dancer Fasih ur Rehman, with music by Mangesh Dhakde, the famous composer and the director of some of the biggest Bollywood hits. The I am Chitrangada project began to take shape in 2013, thanks to the resolve of Shreyashee Nag, co-director of the Barcelona Kathak Project, a classical dance company performing kathak dance from the north of India. As well as performing, the project offers courses for amateurs and professionals, with different levels and groups, serving to raise awareness of Indian dance and culture in Barcelona.

Another of the important ingredients in this staging is the classical Indian song in which the original text enters into a dialogue with the Catalan language as a multiplying element of perspectives and imposed roles. This will be the first time that Tagore's play, which was written in 1936, has been performed in Catalan, thanks to a translation by Agustí Pàniker.
