Guided visit to the Sant Pau Art Nouveau Site

The visits will be led by Mireia Freixa, Professor of Art History and Vice President of the Lluís Domènech i Montaner Foundation.

This is an excellent opportunity to get to know one of Barcelona's architectural treasures. Mireia Freixa, Professor of History of Art and vice president of the Lluís Domènech i Montaner Foundation, will be in charge of guiding visitors around the Sant Pau Art Nouveau Site on the afternoon of Sunday 8 April. She will explain how architecture and decorative arts are integrated at the site, and will immerse participants in the ornamental and symbolic approach of the architect. The visit is titled Catalan Art Nouveau in the Architecture of Domènech i Montaner and will be carried out in Catalan. If you want to take part, it is highly recommended that you acquire your ticket in advance, since places are limited.

The first stone of the Hospital of Santa Creu and Sant Pau was laid on 15 January 1902, and the centre came into operation in 1930. It was built thanks to the legacy of the banker Pau Gil, and its construction responded to the new needs of a city that had grown rapidly during the second half of the 19th century, and to advances in medicine. The project was commissioned by Lluís Domènech i Montaner, and between 1902 and 1913 thirteen Catalan art nouveau buildings were erected. In 1920, his son, Pere Domènech i Roura, continued his work, and six more buildings were constructed in the same style. The UNESCO declared Sant Pau to be a World Heritage site in 1997. In 2009, after eight decades functioning as a medical centre, the Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau moved to new facilities at the northern end of the architectural complex, and restoration work began that culminated in the reopening of the site as a cultural ensemble in 2014.
