Grec 2014 signs off with attendance figures in excess of 127,000

The festival was notable for the excellent reception afforded to an adventurous, power-packed programme, with attendance figures surpassing those of last year

A total of 127,471 spectators attended the 79 performances and activities that made up the programme for Grec 2014, some 13,000 more than last year’s edition. Both Jaume Ciurana, the Deputy Mayor for Culture, Knowledge, Creativity and Innovation, and Ramon Simó, the festival director, highlighted both the quality of the performances and the adventurous nature of a programme to which the public response has been “dynamic and participative”.

According to Ciurana, these positive figures signify the consolidation of the Grec Festival as one of the city’s major arts festivals in terms of the level of cultural mediation involved and the fact that it offers a springboard for new creators. He also highlighted the success of the second edition of MiniGrec, which fulfilled its obligation to provide both children’s entertainment as well as possibilities for summertime family leisure activities.

For Simó, Grec 2014 has managed to fulfil its objectives despite the more than exacting demands of many of the proposals. Average attendance was 58.15%, more than six points above last year’s 52%. In a breakdown by genres, circus performances, with 75.5% attendance, and dance productions, with 68.2%, were the genres that attracted the highest proportional attendance figures, as was the case last year. These were closely followed by music events, with 57.38%, and theatre productions, with 55.39%.

Many of this year’s proposals were fortunate enough to be able to display “SOLD OUT” signs at some point during the festival, including the theatrical productions El testamento de María, Shell, A House in Asia and Nadia, the dance proposals Cal·ligrames en moviment and Vader, the circus production Rhum, the family entertainment shows Piu Piu, L’ombra de Pinotxo and Dot, as well as the concerts by Olafur Arnaldo, Ludovico Einaudi, Joe Satriani and Ivan Ferreiro and productions in other formats, such as Tasta, Toca, Olora...

The official festival closure will take place on Thursday the 31st of July in the Teatre Grec with a concert by Chano Domínguez and Niño Josele. Closure of the festival, however, does not signify the finale for the productions as many of them have made the most of the festival to kick off their tours.
