Gràcia Festa Major 2013

From the 15th to the 21st of August the district will be hosting activities for all tastes and age groups

Once again during the month of August the Gràcia district will be holding its Festa Major, or Annual Festival, probably the most popular of those held throughout the city’s districts. While the festival officially runs from the 15th to the 21st, the inauguration will take place in the Plaça de la Vila on the evening of the 14th at the hands of Antoni Miquel i Cerveró, more commonly known as ‘Leslie’, the vocalist from the band Los Sirex.

One particularly outstanding feature of the Festa Major that attracts throngs of Barcelona dwellers as well as visitors from the world over is the street decorations. This year, sixteen streets and plazas will been displaying their ingenuity and personality in the form of decorations which have been prepared by the residents themselves. Prizes for the best among them will be awarded on Saturday the 17th in the Plaça de la Vila.

The district will also be hosting traditional festival activities such as castellers (human towers) and correfocs (fire-breathing devils). Fans of human tower building who are captivated by the originality and commitment inherent in this activity will surely not want to miss the evening display known as La Diada Castellera on Sunday the 18th of August, which will include the participation of tower building collectives Xiquets de Reus, Xicots de Vilafranca and, naturally, Castellers de la Vila de Gràcia. Regarding the more fiery aspect of the festival, on Wednesday 21st there will be a children’s correfoc in the early evening followed by the main event which will take place just before 10 pm.

It goes without saying that music of all tastes will be present in many of the streets and plazas and performances are often synchronised so that visitors can pick their favourites.

These are just some of the events in the extensive programme of activities for this festival, which is now approaching its bicentenary year. The official programme is available in pdf format in Catalan from this link.
