The fourth edition of the Americana Film Festival gets under way
The festival features some twenty examples of the new American cinema
1 to 5 March sees a new edition of the Americana Film Festival, which every year brings independent American films to Cinemes Girona in the shape of the nineteen titles that are competing for the best film as voted by the public. But to start thing off in style there are a number of preview activities such as Americana SHORTS, a free session of short films at La Casa del Cine, the school where workshops on film criticism are held that give people the right to sit on the jury that awards the best movie prize in the Americana NEXT section, and a free triple bill of out-of-competition films, also at Cinemes Girona, on 28 February.
The festival itself is set to begin on Wednesday 1 March with the screening of Kristopher Avedisian’s Donald Cried at Sala Phenomena, which will be free for those lucky enough to have obtained an invitation on Facebook. The next four days are centred on Cinemes Girona where the remaining films in the programme will be screened in three sections: Americana TOPS featuring award-winning titles like Wiener-Dog by Todd Solondz, Certain Women by Kelly Reichardt and Closet Monster by Stephen Dunn; Americana NEXT with films by up-and-coming directors like Dash Shaw, who makes his debut as a director with the animated film My Entire High School Sinking into the Sea; finally, Americana DOCS features five documentaries, including the Oscar-nominated Life, Animated by Roger Ross Williams and LoveTrue by Alma Har’el.
Complementary activities include Americana KIDS on Saturday 4 and the free screening of the documentary Weiner.
