'Woman in a mantilla', one of the works exhibited in '1917. Picasso in Barcelona'

A completely renewed set of temporary exhibitions at Barcelona’s Picasso Museum

The museum will host four new exhibitions from 26 October.

It’s by no mean common for a museum to inaugurate four exhibitions on the same day. But that’s what’s going to happen on 26 October at Barcelona’s Picasso Museum. All of the exhibitions are scheduled to run until 28 January 2018.

The Shared Studio. Picasso, Fín, Vilató, Xavier has as its goal to show how a passion for printmaking was shared by three generations of the same family and by four very different artists. It features 166 works, some of which were lent by the Vilató family.

Another of the exhibitions, 1917. Picasso in Barcelona aims to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the artist’s last major stay in the city. According to the museum, “This brief period in Barcelona is highly interesting from Picasso’s artistic point of view, as it was a moment of research into new sources and visual resources, where the artist alternated between the more rigorous canons of Cubism and a more classical, realist line of work”.

Lucien Clergue: twenty-seven meetings with Picasso includes the practical totality of the photographs by Lucien Clergue that the museum acquired last year. There are a total of 600 black and white images taken over the course of 27 encounters that took place between 1953 and 1971.

Lastly, and changing the focus away from Picasso himself, Arthur Cravan. Maintenant? focuses instead on the stay by poet, adventurer and boxer Fabian Avenarius Lloyd – under the pseudonym Arthur Cravan – in Barcelona from 1915 to 1916, during which he encountered artistic couples like Juliette Roche and Albert Gleizes, Serge Charchoune and Helena Grunhoff and the Picabias. He took part in a boxing match on 23 April 1916 against Jack Johnson in which Cravan failed to land a single punch on his opponent and was knocked out in the sixth round.
