A closer look at one of the wall paintings on display in the chapel

Surrounded by divine murals

A temporary exhibition allows visitors to rediscover the chapel of Saint Michael at the Monastery of Pedralbes.

The Royal Monastery of Santa Maria de Pedralbes can boast of a host of artistic treasures. One of them is the chapel or cell of Saint Michael, which is decorated with an exceptional set of wall paintings commissioned in the mid-14th century to the painter Ferrer Bassa. A temporary exhibition, titled Divine Murals now allows visitors to rediscover this space. Information obtained during the process of the restoration and conservation of the chapel is presented and sheds light on many little known aspects of the process of its creation.  Indeed, according to those responsible for the exhibition, the new discoveries "bring us closer to the artistic and devotional meaning of the work".

At the moment, two opening dates for the chapel and the exhibition are planned: on Sunday 9 December and Sunday 13 January. Places are limited, so be sure to book your places early at reservationsmonestirpedralbes@bcn.cat or by phone on 93 256 34 27. The restoration work, on the chapel started in 2005 with the research, study and design of the project, while the hands-on work was carried out from 2013 to this very year. The paintings from the chapel exhibit an iconography inspired by Marian devotions and represent the passion of Christ, the joy of the Virgin Mary and various figures of saints.
