An exhibition celebrating one hundred years of Massagran arrives in Barcelona

The exhibition can be seen in the Biblioteca Sant Antoni-Joan Oliver until the end of the month

Up until the 31st of May, the Biblioteca Antoni-Joan Oliver will be playing host to a small format exhibition for both children and adults, based on the first edition of Les Aventures Extraordinàries de Massagran, published in 1910. This edition was the first appearance of the character, a key figure in Catalan children’s literature of the last hundred years.

The original edition of Massagran was a novel published in feuilleton format in the magazine En Patufet.
Written by Josep Maria Folch i Torres, with illustrations by Junceda, Massagran enjoyed extensive popularity and led to a sequel titled Noves Aventures de Massagran. It wasn’t until the 1980s that the adventures were adapted to comic format with scripts by Ramon Folch i Camarasa, the son of Folch i Torres, and illustrations by Madorell. The success of the first two volumes led to the writing of new stories and the complete collection of thirteen books has been a key element in the education of generations of Catalan children and youngsters born in the seventies and eighties.

The exhibition, which documents all the above and much more, is an initiative of the Servei de Biblioteques (Library Services) in collaboration with the Folch i Torres Foundation and the Institució de les Lletres Catalanes.
