Velázquez and other masters of the Spanish Golden Age
An exhibition at CaixaForum features works by Velázquez and the painters of his time who influenced him.
Everything suggests that this will be one of the most popular exhibitions in Barcelona around this time of the year given the scarcity of opportunities to see large-scale works by artists like Velázquez, Tiziano, Rubens, Bruegel the Elder, Zurbarán and Murillo in the same place. But CaixaForum Barcelona has managed to do just that in an exhibition that can be seen until 3 March 2019.
Velázquez and the Golden Age incudes seven works by this iconic artist from Seville (1599-1660), which is not a particularly high percentage given the fact that there are a total of 60 works in the exhibition. But all of the others pieces on display revolve around him and have the aim of tracing his artistic evolution and breaking down the barriers built up by the concept of national schools of art. The exhibition, which is curated by Javier Portús, Doctor in Art History and head of the Department of Spanish Painting at the Prado in Madrid, includes works like Mars Resting, The Adoration of the Magi and The Bufoon. Dr Portús will be giving a talk on the exhibition at Caixaforum at 7pm on Wednesday 12 December and other activities relating to the exhibition include guided visits, family visits and a painting workshop designed for families with children from 5 years of age.
