The work of Joan Brossa on review at MACBA
The exhibition confronts the poet’s work with that of Marcel Mariën, Nicanor Parra and Ian Hamilton-Finlay.
Joan Brossa (Barcelona, 1919-1998) was a poet, playwright and visual artist and one of the most influential and avant-garde Catalan artists of the second half of the 20th century.
Some six years ago, Barelona’s MACBA Contemporary Art Museum was given the collection of the Joan Brossa Foundation. This legacy is made up of manuscripts, documents, correspondence, Brossa’s personal library and other material directly related to the poet. Part of that collection will be on display at MACBA in the exhibition Poesia Brossa, which is set to run from 21 September to 25 February.
Curated by Teresa Grandas and Pedro G. Romero, the exhibition aims to explore Brossa’s way of working and confront his work with that of artists like Marcel Mariën, Nicanor Parr, thereby bringing to the fore “the constellations of artists around Brossa, his interrelationship with works he may have been unaware of, but which allow us to establish parallels and seek dialogues and tensions”. Coinciding with the exhibition, there will be guided visits and, on 11 and 12 December, a course titled La gent parla Brossa by Pedro G. Romero.
