La Virreina to host the exhibition “Photographs from ‘People of the 20th Century’”
The exhibitions features over 180 photographs by August Sander.
August Sander is one of the great names in the history of photography. Born in Herdorf, Germany in 1876, until his death in Cologne in 1964, Sander was an inspiration for many photographers in the early and mid-twentieth century thanks to his unsentimental, politically incisive portraits. In particular, he is celebrated for a series titled ‘People of the 20th Century’, which brought together hundreds of portraits of people from different levels of society and occupational groups in a series of portfolios developed in a project spanning decades. Barcelona’s La Virreina is now hosting an exhibition featuring a selection of 186 images from that series under the titled “Photographs from ‘People of the 20th Century’”, which is complemented by a series with pictures of some of his models’ gestures, looks and postures, as well as handwritten letters from the photographer and other bibliographical material.
The exhibition, which is organised in collaboration with the August Sander Archiv of the Die Photographische Sammlung / SK Stiftung Kultur in Cologne, will be open to the public from 23 March to 23 June.
