The Advertising Boom. Tin, cardboard and tile posters. 1890-1950

The advertising boom on display at the Barcelona Design Museum

The exhibition explains the evolution of the tin, cardboard and tile poster ads that changed advertising forever.

Everyone knows that the ads we see today have little or nothing to do with those of decades ago. However, they would not exist without the transformation that took place between the end of the 19th and the mid 20th century. During that time, advertisers started to create advertising posters using materials that had not been exploited until then: tin, cardboard and ceramic tiles. This fact contributed to spreading the notoriety of the products announced, especially in commercial establishments, on countertops, on store windows and on façades. Tin and cardboard posters filled up establishments and, in some cases, became popular icons in their own right. Thanks to that many brands that still exist today became famous and, in addition, chromolithographic printing brought colour to the world of advertising.

All of this is depicted in the exhibition 'The Advertising Boom. Tin, cardboard and tile posters. 1890-1950', which can be seen at the Barcelona Design Museum from 14 December to 31 March.

Admission to the exhibition costs €3. Additional information is available at the Brcelona Design Museum website.
