Refugi 307

An emotive exploration of the city’s underworld

Artist Giovanna Pezzullo transforms Refugi 307, the best known Civil War bomb shelter, into an art space dealing with memory

Visiting Refugi 307 is always an emotional experience. This sad reminder of the Spanish Civil War in which many Barceloneans sought protection from the National Air Force’s bombs is a must for anyone who wishes to investigate the city’s history. A new insight into the space is to be provided by La ciutat interior, by the artist Giovanna Pezzullo of the Teatro de los Sentidos.

Pezullo transforms this space, with all of its historical connotations concerning horror, death and anguish, into a space for art that explores issues like memory and the secrets of a city. Visitors make their way through the shelter with a guide who goes beyond explaining simple facts to evoke the moments, impacts and emotions of the people who sought shelter there when the skies of Barcelona were occupied by bombers. The project also commemorates the 80th anniversary of the first bomb attack of the war.

If you want to experience all of this you had better act soon. Places are limited and there is only one confirmed date. Additional information is available on the website of the Barcelona History Museum.
