El Grec 2014 reveals its programme of events

The festival will open with a free performance of “M.U.R.S.” by La Fura dels Baus, on the 30th of June in the Castell de Montjuïc

The el Grec Festival Barcelona, has revealed part of the programme for its 38th edition, which will run from the 1st to the 31st of July and will, as always, combine dance, theatre, music and circus as well as a host of parallel activities.

Catalan theatre company La Fura dels Baus, who celebrate their 20th anniversary this year, have regrouped the six initial founding members to create a revolutionary piece entitled, M.U.R.S, which will be performed for the first time at the opening of Grec 2014. The piece has the inimitable stamp of La Fura dels Baus, combining the latest in technology with interaction with the audience and its objective is to be the first Smart-Show in history. The project has been the beneficiary of advice from a number of prestigious universities. M.U.R.S. will open with a free performance on the 30th of June in the Castell de Montjuïc and will run in the same location up until the 5th of July.

The inaugural festival performance will take place in the Teatre Grec on the 1st of July and will feature the New York dance company, Galli Dance, with their production Wonderland, a collection of light-hearted, imaginative choreographies with an inherent message about the dangers of behaving like sheep.

Grec 2014 will also dance to the rhythm of Sun, by the Hofesh Shechter Company, the emotive flamenco performance Romance con Curro, “El Palmo”, by Jaume Villanueva and featuring Antonio Canales or Night of Tango, by the Mora Godoy company of Buenos Aires.

Musical offerings will cover a range of stylistic proposals, such as Mayte Martin, Japanese jazz pianist Hiro, the compositions of Ludovico Einaudi, Eels (the band led by Marck Everett), Marina Rossell performing songs of Georges Moustaki, North American spiritual revival at the hands of Bobby McFerrin or the duet Chano and Josele.

This year’s edition will also include two new spaces, BART and Jamboree, which will host the majority of the musical events, including Oscar D’Leon and the BCN Salsa All Stars, Joan Garriga’s Off the Record, Josh Rose, Joe Satriani and The Jamboree Duets.

Theatrical proposals include the new piece by Jose Sanchis Sinisterra entitled Bartomeu encadenat, musicals Nevares, by Ignasi Roda based on the Pere Calders piece, and Nit de musicals at the hands of Albert Guinovart and the Barcelona Municipal Band.

In repetition of last year’s initiative, younger members of the family can enjoy their own special programme, MiniGrec, which will kick off on the 27th of June with a party which will include performances Piu-Piu, by Fes-t'ho com Vulguis and Tutatis, L'ombra de Pinotxo by Néstor Navarro and Carolina Llacher, Tripula by Farrés Brothers i Cia, Patatu, by Àngels Bassas y Cia, Únics Produccions, Punch & Judy in Afghanistan by the Stuffed Puppet Theatre and Dot, by the company Maduixa Teatre.
