Exploring Barcelona’s 18th century taverns

Born Centre de Cultura i Memòria is preparing to transport us back to the drinking houses of old Barcelona.

As befits a city that was a major travel hub at the time, 18th century Barcelona boasted a good number of inns and taverns where locals and foreigners – including the Italian gentleman Giacomo Casanova – could drink and sleep. We can now explore this world thanks to a guided night tour of the Born neighbourhood that aims to reveal the key aspects of the social life of the period.

One of the most important innovations at the time was aiguardent, a new alcoholic beverage that caused a stir and became one of the favourite tipples in the city’s taverns. Many of those drinking dens are still standing or still remain as a memory, and the tour guide will tell you plenty of stories and anecdotes before the tour finishes with a tapas route and a drink courtesy of the brewers Moritz. The tour is scheduled to take place every Thursday evening until 31 August.

Additional information is available on the Born Centre de Cultura i Memòria website. Reservations are required.
