Diversity in Catalonia

A series of free conferences in the Palau Macaya examines diversity in various sectors of Catalan society

La Caixa Foundation Social Projects (Obra Social) and the Social Diversity Chairmanship of the Pompeu Fabra University have organised a series of five conferences under the title Diversity in Catalonia. Each Tuesday between the 12th of November and the 10th of December a conference in the Palau Macaya will discuss diversity within Catalonia from a different perspective.

Journalist, philosopher and author, Josep Ramoneda, director of the CCCB from 1989 to 2012, will inaugurate the series on the 12th of November with a conference on Cultural diversity. On Tuesday the 19th, Miquel Àngel Essomba, director of the UNESCO Centre of Catalonia –Unescocat and president of Linguapax will present Social diversity in Catalonia.

On the 26th, linguist Carme Junyent, president and co-founder of Grup d’Estudi de les Lengues Amenaçades (GELA – Endangered Languages Study Group) will focus on the issue of languages in Catalonia and, on December 3rd, historian and recognised columnist and media collaborator, Joan B. Culla, will place the emphasis on political diversity.

Finally, on the 10th of December, Joan Estruch, director of the research group ISOR (Research in Sociology and Religion) will close the series with Religious diversity in Catalonia.

The conferences will begin at 7 pm and form part of the framework programme for the Palau Macaya as a new venue for dialog and reflection. For reasons of space, prior inscription is recommended (tel: 934 579 531).
