Considering Matthew Shepard

European debut of a vocal masterpiece

Barcelona’s Palau de la Música presents ‘Considering Matthew Shepard’ by Craig Hella Johnson, a contemporary choral masterpiece with jazz and gospel touches.

Coming to Barcelona’s Palau de la Música for one sole session is Craig Hella Johnson’s 2016 ‘Considering Matthew Shepard’. This contemporary oratory pays tribute to Matthew Shepard, a young man from Leramie, Wyoming, who, in 1988,  was abducted from a gay bar by homophobic townsmen, tortured, tied to a fence post and left to die in a field.

The musical language chosen for the piece is the oratory, that is to say, a dramatic vocal piece for solo singers and chorus, but one that is tinged with ancient and modern musical languages, from baroque music, with many a nod to Bach, to new age, pop, jazz and gospel sounds. This production features the vocal talents of Manu Guix, Marta Mathéu and Els Amics de les Arts, under the scenic direction of David Selvas and Norbert Martínez.
