A classic by Tennessee Williams at Teatre Akadèmia

'The Glass Menagerie' is scheduled to run from 28 September to 30 October

The Glass Menagerie was the first great success in the career of US playwright Tennessee Williams, winner of two Pulitzer Prizes, and is one of his most autobiographical texts. A Catalan language version, translated by Emili Teixidor and directed by Josep M. Pou was staged at Teatre Goya a few years ago, and it is now appearing on the Barcelona stage again at Teatre Akadèmia. The play deals with the abyss that exists between illusions and reality through the story of a southern family in 1930 that is dominated by the caprices of a controlling, frustrated mother who was abandoned by her husband, the father of her two adult children.

Teatre Akadèmia, which is located on Carrer de Buenos Aires, will host this production from 28 September to 30 October. Boris Rotenstein will direct, while Alícia Lorente, Mercè Managuerra, Jordi Robles and Jorge Velasco lead the cast.  The Glass Menagerie is being staged at Teatre Akadèmia thanks to a special agreement with The University of the South at Sewanee (Tennessee).

Tennessee Williams, whose real name was Thomas Lanier Williams, was born in Columbus, Mississipí in 1911 and died in New York in 1983. His plays gained worldwide fame thanks to the film adaptations of a number of his texts, including Cat on a Hot Tin Roof and A Streetcar Named Desire.
