Cinemes Texas reopens

The reopening of the emblematic Cinemes Texas is now a reality. From the 18th of September on, the multiplex theatre formerly known as Lauren Gràcia will reopen under the original name of one of Barcelona’s legendary cinema venues. The former Cine Texas first opened in 1947 and quickly became one of the most famous local cinemas, offering double features at very reasonable prices. In 1995 it opened as the Lauren Gràcia multiplex, but finally closed last year.

As a result of this initiative the city of Barcelona now possesses a total of 540 brand new cinema seats primed for action and distributed in four new theatres that have been named in tribute to four local cinema personalities: directors Francesc Rovira i Beleta and Bigas Luna, film critic José Luis Guarner and director of photography, Néstor Almendros. The complete refurbishment has resulted in a modern, comfortable venue equipped with state-of-the-art digital technology. The man behind the project is Ventura Pons, who created a company in conjunction with a series of partners in order to make the project viable.

The objective of the new Cinemes Texas is to reinstate the spirit of cinema at reasonable prices and, as a result, tickets are priced at just 3 euros. Films will be shown in their original version with subtitles in Catalan (Catalan films will have English subtitles) and will feature children’s matinee sessions at weekends with films dubbed into Catalan.

From the 18th of September on, film goers will once again be able to enjoy the Cinemes Texas, with screenings of such titles as Year of Grace, by Ventura Pons, 12 Years of Slavery, by Steve McQueen, Sunshine on Leith, by Dexter Fletcher and The 100-year-old Man Who Climbed out the Window, by Felix Herngren.
