In addition to the traditional Christmas activities the 30th of November sees the arrival of “El Seguici”
A new Christmas activity arrives to Barcelona this year: the Christmas Spirit. This is a magical figure which, to the accompaniment of a court of musicians with traditional Catalan instruments, brings Christmas to the city. From the 30th of November to the 4th of January, the parade which accompanies the Spirit will fill the streets of the city with dance, music and fantasy on seven separate occasions.
The first of these is on Saturday the 30th of November, on which date the Spirit appears in the Born Centre Cultural to join forces with the tercentenary celebrations. The guest of honour on this occasion will be the Mlt. Hon. Jordi Pujol, who will present the Spirit with the city’s Christmas Staff, an event which will be followed by a parade by “El Seguici” through the streets of the Ciutat Vella district singing Christmas carols and traditional Catalan songs. Along its route, the Spirit will inaugurate a number of Christmas Mangers, such as that installed on the Plaza Sant Jaume or in the Casa dels Entremesos, where it will pronounce an inaugural Christmas address and turn on the lights of the façade of the building.
The Spirit’s Seguici, or Procession, will continue to regale the city with fantasy on the Saturdays of the 7th, 14th, 21st, 22nd (on this occasion in the morning) and 28th of December as well as the 4th of January.
Apart from El Seguici, Christmas in Barcelona will include, as usual, activities such as the Santa Llúcia market with its resident giant, activities on the 31st of December relating to the Hombre de la Nassos (The Man of the Noses) and a variety of street fairs located, for example, in the Sagrada Familia, the Gran Via or the Solidarity Fair in the Jardins de Salvador Espriu.
In addition, throughout the month of December the city’s markets and museums will adapt their venues and programmes to include family-oriented events, offering a series of Christmas-related activities especially designed for children as well as a number of charitable events.
