“Catalonia raises the curtain for 2014”, in the Liceu

The gala performance, directed by Joaquim Oristrell, will take place on Monday the 15th of September and will hail the opening of the new theatre season

On Monday the 15th of September, beginning at 9.30 pm, the Gran Teatre del Liceu will host a gala performance entitled Catalunya aixeca el teló 2014 (Catalonia raises the curtain for 2014) designed to hail the opening of the new theatre season in Barcelona and the rest of Catalonia. The show is directed by film maker, script writer and dramatist Joaquim Oristrell and promises to be a spectacular event. In the words of the director, “The aim, above all, is for the performance to be a unifying performance that represents all aspects of Catalan theatre, public, private, small, large, children, adults, etc.”

In the absence of a formal MC, the gala will evolve in the form of a series musical numbers by the Cor de Teatre group coupled with monologues by Roger de Gràcia, Eduard Farelo and Agnès Busquets which will serve as introductions to the various sections of the performance. The event will also feature a smattering of audio-visual clips, the most noteworthy being a video featuring VIPs from Catalan society, such as the president of the Catalan parliament (Generalitat) Artur Mas and writer Jaume Cabré , reflecting of the current state of Catalan theatre.

Catalunya aixeca el teló will also include fragments of much-awaited musicals such as the return of Mar i Cel and the new version of Sister Act. In addition, and among other surprises, actors and actresses the likes of Josep Maria Pou, Emma Vilarasau, Jordi Bosch, Carme Elias and Jordi Boixaderas will interpret fragments of popular theatrical pieces from around the globe.

Catalunya aixeca el teló can be seen in the Gran Teatre del Liceu on the 15th of September, beginning at 9.30 pm and will be televised on TV3 the following day. Tickets for the event may be purchased here.
