“Catalan comic sketch artists in the trenches”, in the Ateneu Barcelonès

On the 15th of September the centre has programmed a conference with Jaume Capdevila, alias Kap, as part of the series “The Great War as seen from the Ateneu Barcelonès”

On the 15th of September the Ateneu Barcelonès will host a conference entitled Catalan comic sketch artists in the trenches, presented by specialist press artist Jaume Capdevila, better known by his pseudonym, Kap. Capdevila currently collaborates with some of Catalonia’s principle newspapers and publications. He studied fine arts in the University of Barcelona and, apart from his work as a comic sketch artist, focusses his talents on the study and dissemination of graphic humour.

The objective of the conference is to acquaint those in attendance with the works of Catalan caricature artists who, in the early 20th century, published savage sketches and satirical cartoons against the Kaiser and the Germans, as well as against Spanish censorship, in publications such as L’Esquella de la Torratxa, la Campana de Gràcia, Iberia and La Publicitat.

The conference forms part of the series The Great War as seen from the Ateneu Barcelonès, designed to complement the homonymous exhibition currently on display in the centre’s entrance area and library in commemoration of the centenary of the beginning of the First World War. The conference entitled Catalan sketch artists in the trenches will be given in Catalan on the 15th of September beginning at 7.30 pm in the Sala Verdaguer of the Ateneu Barcelonès.
