The workshop of Oleguer Junyent

Cases Singulars opens the doors to the art studio of Oleguer Junyent

A visit to the only Catalan modernist artist’s studio that still exists in Barcelona.

On the second Saturday of every month from February to June, the Cases Singulars project, which organises visits to some of Barcelona and Catalonia’s most iconic buildings, is offering the chance to explore the art studio of Oleguer Junyent, which is located in Carrer de Bonavista in Gràcia. Following the wishes of his family, the studio has been kept just the way he left it when he died in 1956, making the visit an opportunity to take a trip back in time and see the last remaining studio of a Catalan modernist artist.

Oleguer Junyent i Sans, who was born in Barcelona in 1876, was a notable painter, a renovator of the realist school, and one of the major stage designers of his era. A disciple of leading figures like Fèlix Urgellès, Salvador Alarma and Francesc Rovirosa, Junyent created more than 40 stage designs for the Gran Teatre del Liceu.  He was also an outstanding decorator, in collaboration with artists like Gaspar Homar and Juli Batllevell. His passion for travelling and collecting is another aspect of his multifaceted personality, and he spent 1908 and 1909 on a round the world trip. Upon his return he bought the house where he set up is last studio and where to this day you can still see, together with the original furniture, paintings and sketches of his stage designs, works by his colleagues and friends and souvenirs of his travels, as well as a collection of dolls belonging to his niece Maria Junyent.
