The rules have been published governing the appointment of the director of the Picasso Museum in Barcelona, the aim of which is the management, organisation and administration of the Museum and its heritage and resources.

The rules state that the new management must continue to develop the following strategic lines:

1.        Accentuate the specific nature of the museum through bespoke discourse adapted to the cultural realities of Barcelona and Catalonia within an international action framework.

2.        Foster the construction of new narratives about the artist, reviewing his relationship with Barcelona and the different stories of Modernity.

3.        Strengthen national and international networking with other museums and documentation, research and exhibition centres whose work focuses on Picasso and modern and contemporary art in general.

4.        Focus on the collection as the hub of the Museum, promote knowledge of it and its visibility and propose new discourses through the collection that helps us reassess the artist and his context.

5.        Favour new acquisitions and obtain works through donations, purchases or deposits from the numerous archives and documents associated with Picasso.

6.        Stress the generation of knowledge and research to create a reference space for the study and research of the artist and his links to the modern day.

7.        Strengthen the Museum's teaching, mediation and public programme as a core part of its policies.

8.        Transform the centre into a museum for the neighbourhood, the city and the world, in short for its citizens, offering twenty-first century museum services and activities.

Selection process

Among other questions, particular attention will be given to knowledge of Picasso's world and the world of culture in general, a professional career which shows expertise regarding Picasso and his work. In this sense, knowledge of the artist's environment (collector families, experts and specialist museums) will also be valued very positively. The ability to link the Picasso's world with the many stories about modernity and art with other disciplines will also be valued, as will the ability to relate these stories to Picasso's work.

In terms of management experience, the candidate must be able to coordinate working teams to implement and review the Museum's strategies, policies and programmes and its aims, and to ensure that its resources are managed efficiently and transparently. They must also show relevant leadership skills, high levels of communication and negotiation, planning, priority assessment, decision-making and conflict resolution skills. The ability to link the world of art with other creative, humanities and scientific disciplines to achieve a global and multidisciplinary focus will also be valued. The candidate's willingness and ability to strengthen the Museum's relationship with public and local networks will be taken into consideration, as will networking and collaboration with communities and institutions at city, country and international level.

We require someone with a clear vision of what the positioning of the Picasso Museum Foundation of Barcelona should be in all its spheres of action, both nationally and internationally.
