A scene from the play ‘Sous la plage’

Books and exhibitions in favour of tolerance

On World Refugee Day, libraries and civic centres in Barcelona will be hosting cultural activities on the theme of political asylum.

Since 2001, 20 June has seen the celebration of the UN’s World Refugee Day. The current crisis arising from the civil war in Syria has given the issue even more visibility and many people in Catalonia have expressed their willingness to welcome refugees, though a lot of work remains to be done. That’s why Barcelona is set to host a series of activities from 6 April to 30 September featuring books, plays, films… All at the service of the same idea: we all need to become more involved.

The list of activities is long but we have some special recommendations to make. For example, on 20 June at plaça Reial micro theatre 'Refugis', until 30 September you can visit a photo exhibition at Plaça de les Glòries titled ‘Refugee Dreams’, featuring the work of young people who have arrived in Barcelona to claim asylum. Another recommendation is the play ‘Engrunes’ on 14 June at Espai Jove La Fontana, which is based on the tale of Hansel and Gretel. Another recommended play is Sous la plage’, which tackles current historical tensions and can be seen at Casa Elizalde on 15 June. Also, the exhibition ‘Life after Idomeni’, with images of Europe’s refugee camps, can be seen at Espai Jove La Fontana until 30 June.

As we mentioned, the list of activities is very long. Check it out at the following link.
