 Traditional turning-on of the lights

Barcelona’s Christmas lights are coming on

The official switching-on of the seasonal illumination will feature, for the first time, a theatrical performance

Christmas is just around the corner, and one of the first symptoms of the arrival of the festive season is the official switch-on of Barcelona’s Christmas street lights. And this year, in a new development, the switching-on ceremony will also feature a free performance that is open to everyone in the city. Like every year, the Christmas lights can come on thanks to the collaboration of commercial establishments in the different neighbourhoods that make up Barcelona.

Actress Mercè Sampietro will be presiding over the ceremony, which will also see the attendance of the city’s major authorities. Three theatre companies with plenty of experience in large-scale street theatre performances - EfímerAntigua i Barbuda and José Menchero – will feature in a performance that will also see the presentation of a Christmas icon - la Ballarina - a large mechanical figure that will appear from inside a music box.

This Christmas classic is scheduled to take place at 7pm on 24 November at the crossroads of Ronda de Sant Pau and Avinguda Paral·lel.
