Barcelona Percussion Competition, in the Guinardó district

On the 26th of April the initiative will celebrate its 9th edition with the participation of 29 percussion groups consisting of 700 musicians from throughout Catalonia

On Saturday the 26th of April, the Barcelona percussion competition, Concurs Barcelona Percussió, will once again take to the streets of the Guinardó district. This year’s event boasts the participation of 29 percussion groups and a total of 700 musicians from the length and breadth of Catalonia.

The competition, the most important of its kind in Barcelona and one of the most firmly established in southern Europe, includes qualifying rounds, passacaglia, and final stages, all of which will take place, free of charge, in the Plaça Salvador Riera, Parc del Guinardó and Avinguda de la Mare de Déu de Montserrat.

Participating groups compete in two categories: eleven in the category relating to the world of fire, in other words, groups which habitually accompany Catalonia’s fire-related festivals, such as devil’s dances, beasts and “correfocs”, and the remaining eighteen in the free category which includes rhythms from whatever origin. The objective of the competition is to acquaint the general public with all aspects of street percussion.
