The Barcelona metropolitan area forms the subject of an exhibition

“Barcelona Metropolis”, which can be seen up until the 25th of April in the Edifici Disseny HUB Barcelona, reveals the past, present and future of this administrative and geographical area

Comprising 36 municipalities and with a population of more than 3.2 million, the Barcelona metropolitan area is a significant urban, administrative and geographical conurbation, the reality of which is now presented via an exhibition entitled Barcelona Metropolis.

Distributed over a central space and a number of adjoining cubicles, the exhibition reveals the concept of Barcelona as a unique metropolis and compares it geographically and culturally with other large cities around the world such as Boston, Berlin and San Francisco, while simultaneously revealing the significant changes that the city has been subjected to over the last 40 years, such as the cleaning up of the beaches and riverbeds, the refurbishment of the streets and widening of the pavements and the construction of new parks and green areas, all of which had a very positive impact on the position of Barcelona within a European context.

Barcelona Metropolis also explains the origins of the villages in the area, the majority of which have undergone significant growth during the 19th and 20th centuries, and the changes in the metropolitan area population dynamic in recent times - the number of homes with couples and children has declined 15.3%, while the number of homes with couples but without children has risen 4.4%, for example. Other aspects, such as the economic and financial activity of the metropolitan area, are, however, far more complex and diverse.

Also of note in the exhibition are the contemporary landscapes that, in general, have emerged from recent metropolises, such as the new structures designed exclusively for the purposes of transport and ease of movement that have definitively conditioned modern urban landscapes - all in all, a vision of the past, present and conceivable future of the city of Barcelona and its surroundings.
