The Barcelona International Auteur Film Festival 2013 gets underway

The D’A will also be playing host an exclusive showing of Frances Ha, a modern fable by Noah Baumbach, as well as other jewels such as Like Someone in Love a Japanese film by the veteran Abbas Kiarostami, both of which make up part of the main section of the festival, titled Directions. This section will also include the Portuguese film noir The Last Time I Saw Macao (João Pedro Rodrigues, João Rui Guerra) and the family drama A Perdre La Raison, by Belgian film maker Joachim Lafosse.
 

The Talents section, dedicated to upcoming talents who have made a name for themselves on the strength of their first films, includes the surprising British documentary The Imposter, by Bart Layton, which shares the category with Boy Eating the Bird’s Food (Ektoras Lygizos), a brutal portrayal of a young boy in conditions of extreme poverty, and Simon Killer (Antonio Campos), the fateful travels of a young man in Paris.
 

The customary Catalan author section will include films such as La Lapidation de Saint Etienne (Pere Vilà) and Et dec una nit de divendres (Dimas Rodríguez), while the Film Diaries section will be shedding a light on autofiction with films such as Mi Loco Erasmus, by Carlo Padial or Tiny Furniture, directed by Lena Dunham before her success with the series Girls. The Realities section is dedicated to films that are more tuned to current affairs and in this case Land of Hope, the film by Sion Sono about the 2011 earthquake in Japan, is the principle exponent.
 

This year’s Retrospectives section is dedicated to the new Romanian cinema. The inauguration ceremony will be at the hands of the film Tango Libre, by Frédéric Fonteyne, with the attendance of the principal actor, Sergi López, while the Catalan film La Plaga (Neus Ballús) will be in charge of closing the event.
