Barcelona commemorates the 40th anniversary of the first Catalan Women’s Days

The commemorative acts will take place from January to July 2017 in all ten city districts

To recall, honour and raise awareness of the mobilizations carried out by women in order to improve lives in the city’s neighbourhoods and build more democratic and just social relations, from January the Commissariat for Historical Memory Programmes of Barcelona City Council will begin a commemorative project titled in movement[s]. the women of Barcelona. 40 years and more. 1976-2016, coinciding with the 40th anniversary of the first Catalan Women’s Days. That event was a watershed in the lives of the women and the city: many questions that had previously been reserved for the private sphere entered the public and political sphere, paving the way for some of the most important campaigns and mobilisations of the following years. That was back in May 1976, when some four thousand women came together in the main hall of the University of Barcelona to raise awareness of their struggle and demands.

The programme will run until July in all ten city districts. Implemented in collaboration with the city’s districts and curated by Cristina Borderías, the programme includes a small itinerant exhibition and a cycle of roundtable discussions and film forums that are open to everyone, as well as the screening of a documentary titled El despertar de les dones: la lluita feminista, which depicts the lives of women of different origins in the first Catalan Women’s Days. The city neighbourhoods’ civic centres, libraries, cultural associations and community centres will be the main venues for the numerous acts scheduled.
