Barcelona: capital of jazz (and flamenco)

The Barcelona Jazz Festival brings tops names in jazz and flamenco to the city

Once again (and for the 45th edition) it’s time for the biggest jazz related event of the year to hit Barcelona in the shape of the Voll-Damm Barcelona International Jazz Festival, with concerts by The Rad Trads (Harlem Club, 19 October) and Los Van Van (Sala Barts, 20 October) on this year’s programme. And the festival is set to kick off on 24 October with performance by the quintet including Cuban pianist Chucho Valdés – a festival fixture - and US saxophonist Joe Lovano.

As usual, the concerts will take place in the city’s main jazz clubs, as well as spreading out to bigger venues such as the Palau de la Música and L'Auditori. Flamenco will be an important part of this year’s festival with the return of the section titled De cajón!, with performances by names like José Mercé (4 November), Vicente Amigo (5 November) and Tomatito (18 November).

Other prestigious artists appearing in this year’s edition include the US based Japanese musician Hiromi Uehara (26 October), the ever-popular Bill Frisell Quartet (28 October), James Rhodes with an acoustic set (10 November) and popular composer Michael Nyman with his jazz band (10 November).
