The museum-apartment at Casa Bloc, an icon of rationalist architecture

Making architecture accessible to everyone

Architecture Week 2018 is here with activities such as guided walking routes, cinema, exhibitions and visits.

From 10 to 20 May, architecture will become more accessible for the citizens of Barcelona and we will have the opportunity to learn about how the buildings and structures that surround us affect us in our day to day lives. Architecture Week 2018 is an initiative by Barcelona City Council, Col·legi d'Arquitectes de Catalunya (COAC) and the Mies van der Rohe Foundation, in collaboration with Barcelona Building Construmat and ArquinFAD.

The events scheduled are many and varied and reach out to all of the 10 districts of the city. First of all, we should point out that the former Model Prison, which stopped performing its original function less than a year ago, is the invited space for the present edition, and will play host to a conference on 14 May with the title Impertinències urbanes, quan les presons acaben fent ciutat, and a very special concert on 12 May featuring a work for six percussionists by composer and architect Ianis Xenakis, called Persephassa, among other events. You can also see the installation Visually walking towards, which will take visitors to the old watchtowers of the prison and to a conception of infinite space.

Some of the other activities on the programme are, for example, a guided tour on 12 and 19 May around one of the apartments of Casa Bloc, a building that has become an icon of rationalist architecture in Barcelona, a conference by the photographer Manolo Laguillo on the 16 May in the conference hall at COAC and, at the same place but on 18 May, the screening of the film Zootropolis, followed by a talk by the architect Jaume Prat, and a guided tour of the Mies van der Rohe Pavilion through small dance pieces on 19 May. Guided tours are planned in all districts and are free, though it is necessary to book - and you can also visit iconic buildings like Torre del Aguas del Besòs, Fàbrica del Sol, the Republic Pavilion and the tunnels that join the Cases de l'Aigua.
